unleashing the magic of humanity

This is note #6 of 6 doing a deeper dive into a framework we are building toward.

JFK visited NASA headquarters in 1961.While touring the facility he introduced himself to a janitor who was mopping the floor and asked him what he did at NASA.

The janitor’s reply: “I’m helping put a man on the moon!”

The janitor’s tasks were tied to a greater purpose. He was part of something bigger.

Framing work higher up the hierarchy of needs is an important aspect to leadership:

Survival—> Success—> Significance

The parable of the three brick layers showcases this:

“What are you doing?”

“I’m a brick layer. I’m working hard laying bricks to feed my family,” the man replied. [Survival]

”What are you doing?”

“I’m a builder. I’m building a wall,” the second responded. [Success]

“What are you doing?”

“I’m a cathedral builder. I’m building a great cathedral to the Almighty.” [Significance]

The door to happiness opens outward. (i.e Significance - service to others) Creating an environment for people to open the door outward for teammates, vendors, customers, shareholders, and community.

The great leaders create an environment to serve others unleashing the magic of humanity.

I think the framework we have discussed for the past two months leads to:

Work that matters.

Created by people who care.

I think that is worth building toward.

Onward,

Matt
